Let's not gloss over that Marcial had a 24 pack of Hamm's in his locker, that's awesome! The Milwaukee Braves always found themselves in marathon games, they were the team going up against Harvey Haddix when had a perfect game through 12 innings.
Stories like this are why I never write fiction. Or worry about running out of things to write about. Absolutely, we'll have wooly mammoths (and dinosaurs) again, but never another game like this. Extinct forever.
I enjoyed this piece, Paul - I don’t remember seeing Spahn pitch, but I remember Marichal with that crazy high kick. That was the era of National League powerhouse pitchers, like Bob Gibson, Fergie Jenkins and Tom Seaver - good stuff!
Yep, I believe the mound had been lowered in the previous year or two, ushering in what would culminate in the 1968 Year of the Pitcher. Spahn couldn't hang around that long but Marichal was certainly a big part of it. Thanks Bill!

I had never noticed this before, Ted. I must have been too dazzled by the players in the foreground of that shot. Great spot!
Great article Paul! Would never happen today for a variety of reasons.

That was excellent, Paul; literally had me on the edge of my seat because I didn’t know the outcome. Looking forward to next week. Meg
