Omgosh, Paul, what exciting descriptions and narrative! I felt like I was there. And the details that put Oliver in as catcher. Ken’s limited repertoire that day. That no-hitter was meant to be!
Thank you, I always appreciate the feedback. With this one I was going for tension and drama and less silliness. It's nice to be able to mix things up. That does make me think about Ken that day, who couldn't do that!
Sure is different today for the fans. Forget getting on the field. Security is so tight it’s like the the President is there. In the old days you could try to get closer to field level at a Yankee game about 7th inning. Now you are stopped trying to approach. I attended a game years ago to find my seat was physically broken. They wouldn’t give me another seat. They made me stand like two innings while they finally got someone to show up with tools. Eventually I did get to sit… but my begs for a closer seat were ignored.
It is almost another world. For this game, I think probably half the available tickets would have been held for same-day sales. That was a P.K. Wrigley priority and while I'm sure it had drawbacks, in the era of StubHub resales and linked accounts, it sure seems charming to me.
Thanks for the feedback! I set out to tell a more "vanilla" baseball story with this one and so hearing you use those two magic words is a high compliment.
And the game itself is changing too with larger bases, sliding gloves, pitch clocks, batter clocks, no more signs from the catchers partly due to the Rangers caught cheating v. the Yanks years back but I’m sure other teams were doing it too. I bet eventually umpires won’t be calling balls & strikes partly due to the fact they stink at it. Seems they get worse every year. Strike zones vary as the games progress too. And I’d like someone… anyone to explain to me why catchers framing the pitch is even allowed. To me it’s CHEATING. The MLB came down on Pete Rose & never got off his back but they allow framing & wet fingers now. Explain to me ANYONE!

That's a homer your own self there Paul. It's outta here !
Your narrative offered me some fresh details about that game that I did not know - good stuff, Paul.
I’d love to hear about that 1956 World Series perfect game and other perfect games sometime.
